Here we go… finally!
Flipping the switch on this website and making it go live has been long in the making; not in terms of putting it together (thank you WordPress), but getting to a point where having this site became a necessity.
When I finished The Pelican and decided to self-publish, I had no idea that writing the novel would turn out to be the easy part. Well, that probably did not come out right. When I am writing, zoning out into the world I create and getting to know the characters I encounter (some of them better than people that are actually living and breathing), I am comfortable and in control. I know what I am doing. Publishing… not so much.
To be completely honest, I had no idea what I was taking on and how involved this whole thing would turn out to be. Anyone can upload a Kindle file to Amazon and hope for the best, but that’s by far not the end of it… more like the beginning.
There’s the obligatory Facebook page, the website, the author page on Amazon, and the Goodreads profile. There are promotions and mailing lists, review copies and giveaways, pre-order offers and blog posts, just to name a few. The list is as endless as you want it to be. Sounds overwhelming? It was in the beginning. Luckily there is a huge amount of information out there (some of which I’ll probably share in a post down the road), and I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel I chose to run into.
Anyway, time will tell if all of this was worth it. Until then, I am having a blast of a time turning out more stories that just won’t keep quiet in my head and trying to get you guys to read them. On that note, check out The Pelican. I hope it makes you feel only half of what I felt writing it. It’s a tough subject that touches people in many different ways – and I’d certainly be thrilled to hear about it.
